Hershel & The Hanukkah Goblins Program

  • A Message from Director, Noah Elman

I can’t remember the first time I read Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins; in my memory, the book was always around this time of year. I do have clear memories, however, of my mother reading it with me, pointing to illustrations of the people and the towns, and explaining, “That’s where our family lived.”
In Judaism, there is a concept called “l’dor v’dor” which translates to “from generation to generation”. This is the idea that one of the most important obligations (or mitzvahs) of being Jewish is to pass on the values, the culture, and the history of the Jewish people to the next generation. When Eric Kimmel decided to research and create a brand new story of Hershel of Ostropol, he was making a commitment to this value. When my mother handed me this book and flipped through the pages with me, she also was making a commitment to this value. Seven years ago, when Strawdog first adapted Kimmel’s words to the stage and decided to make a new Chicago holiday tradition, they were making a commitment to this value. Now, I am honored to be returning for a second year and doing my part in holding “l’dor v’dor” in my heart and in my actions.
I was lucky to grow up in a family and in a community that held this concept as essential but I will never forget being eight years old on a cross-country trip with my mother. She pulled over at some point along the journey, turned to me, and told me that the deeply rooted Jewish community I had grown up in was unique and not to be taken for granted. She explained that having that community was a risk in so many parts of the world. Families weren’t always free to openly commit to “l’dor v’dor”.
Antisemitic incidents have been on the rise for several years now. Those words that my mother said to me have become increasingly more and more true. Knowing all this, this show becomes even more essential; it reminds us that in the face of great oppression, we are still here. And so as you leave tonight, I hope that the adults can look to the children in the audience and say, “Look, here we are!” and that the children can say, “Yes, I see. Hineini; here I am.”

And, hey, would it be a Jewish story if we didn’t laugh and sing along the way?
Thank you and please enjoy the show!

    B’Shalom,
    Noah Elman

Land Acknowledgement

Strawdog would like to acknowledge the land that we occupy today. Before European invasion, the Chicagoland area was home to the Council of the Three Fires - composed of the Ojibwe, Odawa and Potawatomi Nations - as well as the Miami, Ho-Chunk, Menominee, Sac, Fox, Kickapoo and Illinois Nations. We honor the native communities of the past and the 65,000 native people living in Chicago today.

It is our goal that through this acknowledgement, we and the Chicago community can begin to work towards equity, healing and the celebration of Indigenous people.

What is a land acknowledgement?

A land acknowledgement is a statement used to recognize the indigenous people who first occupied the land. Find more details at https://usdac.us/nativeland

Why is Strawdog making a land acknowledgement?

We are making a land acknowledgement as a show of respect to the indigenous people of Chicago. Land acknowledgements are a stepping stone to raising awareness about indigenous tribes. When we gather, it gives us an opportunity to honor indigenous beliefs and recognize the land as sacred.

How should I respond?

Listen to the acknowledgement and be aware of the thoughts and feelings that arise during and after the land acknowledgement. Everyone reacts differently. It might be the first time you are hearing the names of tribes from your area. Follow up with your thoughts and questions. Take action.

How can I find ways to support Indigenous people of Chicago
